A reminder from a year ago today.
Get a mini storage unit. So many of my clients resist the expenditure of my advice, but I push hard to get them to do it, for these and other reasons: Your house probably has too much in it. That detracts from it’s value. Important advice clients – get your listing agent in as soon as you realize you will be moving. Now means now, not a month before you list. I say this for two reasons: I know you, you have stuff in your house. Too much stuff. You don’t want to admit it, but you do. A good agent will know. The buyers coming to see your home will feel it. It will lower the value of your home. It will take you longer to sell it.
Move em out, all these things: the kids toys from 1980, the clothes you expect to fit into but don’t, the locked trunk with old boy friends lettters hidden at the bottom, the clutter in the bedrooms – box it up – move it out. While you are at it, your sewing room, empty it. Out to the garage, buyers would like to see it, all that stuff, out. After that, go back to the closets, if it is on the floor, it goes to storage. You will need to remove some of your accessories, your religious pictures (sorry), and half of the things you value that make the house seem too small.
Reason 2: YOUR SANITY. Start moving into a storage near where you are going to buy. You will probably make so many trips to the new home, or drive by it, you could fill your unit by taking a car load each time. I know this will surpise some, but we do this, it is amazing. This provides you a home to sell not full of stuff, it makes your final move much easier, and it puts stuff in storage instead of the garage in the new house. Moving in this way is so pleasant, when you want box, run down to the local storage, bring home what you want and put it in its new proper place.
